This book shows how a whole Society can be contaminated by evil and was written by the author to counter the claim that German citizens could be unaware of the iniquities of Nazism. Max vin der Grün's family were poor small town working class.. His grandfather was a carter and loyal friend of the baron for whom he worked near the Czech border, who knew early on that Hitler meant trouble. His mother was a domestic servant, his father was a cobbler and a Jehovah's Witness who was sent to work in the salt mines. One uncle was a Communist, another was a Nazi. They argued round the same table. The book begins with his own birth in the late 20's and chronicles all that was public knowledge through broadcasts. newspapers and official diktats. He describes what he saw in his own village - the people disappearing. He describes the creeping tide of evil that eventually controlled every one's lives.
