5Intreguing and Brilliant
By RWARD-TSANG
This book was absolutely great. I really enjoyed reading it and didn't want to put the book down. Each chapter revealed a new secret, and you would discover that The Compound isn't exactly what it seems. You feel as if you are part of the book and that the chracters are talking to you. All of the twists and turns that the father has caused keeps you entertained, especially when you find out that what the father is doing to keep his family safe - in fact it isn't.

2Great premise let down by simplistic cliched writing
By A. Linton
Some stories aimed at teenagers/YAs can be enjoyed by adults also, this book sadly is not one of them. The author starts with a great idea - a rich domineering patriarch moves his wife and (some of) his kids into a luxury nuclear bunker and from that point basically controls their entire lives and their access to the outside world. Unfortunately the author moves from this great premise into very silly territory - such as the whole cloning/''supplements' subplot (which makes zero sense in terms of survival it must just be there for the shock factor). There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to many of the things which happen - food supplies are contaminated - is the evil father behind this and if so what rational motive could he have? Never mind - he's insane! - that apparently covers any eventuality. This is lazy plotting and an insult to the intelligence of any reader of any age. Don't even get me started on the mysterious code and the puzzles that have to be solved which might be more relevant to a computer game than a novel. The central mystery is solved far too soon, and from then on the story just gets sillier and sillier with the author using every action/horror movie cliché she can think of and in the end turning the whole thing into a rather predictable morality lesson about the central character learning to be less selfish and interact more with his siblings. Definitely not worth the money I paid for it.

4Too many spoilers
By Andy Phillips
This book appears to be aimed at the Young Adult market, based on the style of the writing and the central character being a teenage boy. The boy is part of a very rich family and his father is slightly obsessed with nuclear war. The father has used his wealth to build a huge luxury bunker and the family happen to be camping nearby when he receives warning of an attack. The family close the shelter's doors with the intention of not opening them for 15 years, and then realise that the main character's twin brother and his grandmother have accidently been left behind. The bulk of the story takes place years later, after the family has become used to living in the bunker. Things don't quite feel right to the children and there is more going on than first appeared. This is all fine, and there is a feeling of tension as things progress, but a lot of the story is given away by the blurb on the back of the book, and even the strap line at the bottom of the front cover. If I didn't see what was coming I would have enjoyed the book a lot more.
