4Cast Iron winner

The Jack Howard Series fascinate me in that they detail a great deal of action underwater, and as a non-swimmer, I become enthralled with his mainly under sea, or in this case down an abandoned mine, exploits. Mr. Gibbins has done a tremendous amount of research and allied a number of events to produce a very readable instalment in the series. The only problem I had was that there was almost too much factual information involving Heinrich Schliemann and his exploits regarding the discovery of Troy, plus the involvement of William Gladstone and Otto Von Bismarck, along with Nazi concentration camps. It was almost overload, but it did lead to an exciting series of episodes, culminating in a very satisfactory conclusion – although I think that the next book in the series may link back to parts of this one.Howard and his full time companion Costas have an almost telepathic understanding with each other, enabling them to succeed when others might have failed. The only failing in the book is making the Russian thugs who are involved in the diving as thick as they appear to be in the story – experienced divers would not take that risk! That apart the involvement of Jack Howard’s young daughter, Rebecca, herself training as an archaeologist, and the threat to her well-being, make this a very good read.

3Worth the perseverance
By Kate
The Mask of Troy is the first novel that I've read by David Gibbins and I must be honest I almost didn't finish it. Despite an interesting story and some likeable characters I reached a stage where I couldn't stand one more character calling a time out to stand off to one side, interrupting the plot, to describe in minute detail some historical fact or archaeological discovery. The story focuses on the discoveries of Schliemann in Mycenae and Troy and the more recent find of a shipwreck off the coast of Gallipoli. What did Schliemann find? Offset against this is the mystery of the treasure hidden by the Nazis in a Polish mine, buried by victims of the Holocaust. Hero and marine archaeologist Jack Howard is accompanied by his friend Costas and, ala Dirk Pitt, his newly discovered daughter to fight to reveal the truth about the greatest discovery from Troy. After a great deal of exposition from the author, and some determination from the reader, the story finally takes off and the second half is far superior to the first.I liked the characters enough to want to give this series another shot and so I do think it's worth the effort of reading the latest. However, I live in hope that Gibbins will realise that plot and exposition should exist hand in hand and not with one at the expense of the other.
