This is a practical guide to improving classical playing for amateurs which is interesting despite its age (written in the 1940s). For me the most useful things were the very good ideas on practicing scales (much more than just the boring straight scales that you will get with ABRSM and Trinity even at Grade 8), the chapter on playing cross-rhythms (e.g. 3 against 2), and the detailed advice on how to improve difficult passages, and memorise whole works. There is a good repertoire guide as well. I have read a number of books on improving piano technique and this is among the more helpful. I made a mistake and got the e-book on my Kindle which is not very well transcribed with quite a few typos, the hard copy is probably a better bet.

I love this book. During Christmas 2014, I decided to dust off my ancient digital piano and start playing. This book gave me essential strategies to get the most from my practice. As suggested in the book I began with a piece that was a little out of my range. Also mentioned an hour a day practice. Within a month my playing improved so much that I bought a new piano from Yamaha London. An expensive purchase, which meant I had to be committed to the instrument. Now I had taken piano lessons from 7 to 17. I left at around Grade 5+. When I began I hadn't played for about 20 years. It was a struggle at first. But 1hr became 2hrs a day on weekdays. Then 3hrs a day on weekends. I have just started Schubert Impromptu G minor, yesterday. Not that it matters I read on the Internet that is grade 7!!! Playing the piano is a gift, ladies and gentlemen. If you are lucky enough to have the chance of playing seize it. You won't regret it. Oh btw this book was helpful because it inspires during those times that difficulties in practice seem insurmountable. Enjoy!!!!
