I read it first 50 years ago, but it has lost none of its intensity in the interim. By turns comic, tragic, satirical, fantastical, this is a page turning evocation of life in Danzig in the run up to and during World War II, and the immediate post war years in Germany. Characters are well drawn and (mostly) believable, and the narrative proceeds as seen through the eyes of Oskar, who stops growing at the age of five or thereabouts. He is treated as a child by the grown ups, but as he grows older (though not taller) he has an increasingly adult perspective on the world around him. The language is complex, but not inaccessible, and it is always worth ploughing through the more difficult passages to discover the next brilliant scene. For anyone who knows Germany or German this is definitely a must read.
