This is my desert island craft book. Indents of letterpress on a rough cardboard cover. Wobbly lined illustrations and photos of Purgatory's eclectic creations. Exquisite workmanship and original thought, that, thanks to Esther K. Smith's kindly tone, leaves you not weeping at your own inadequacy, but shot with starting pistol eagerness. It's exhilarating to be able to start immediately, as you will be able to take your Amazon invoice and fold the super easy, very satisfying, child winning "Instant Book". No glue required. It encourages not replication of another's work, but your own, unique journey in the book arts.

I didn't know anything about making books before reading 'how to make books' by Esther Smith. What I've liked most about this books is that there are some very simple techniques that allows everyone to be able to make books, from the very start of the book. They may be very simple ones, but I'm really pleased that I can follow the techniques. I find the books fascinating and have never thought about the various materials that you can make books with, such as fabrics and carpet tiles! There are step by step instructions, great pictures that explain each step and on each page the items you will need. If I've managed to make a book from this, then I think the instructions must be very good!!I think more on the equipment would be helpful, but there are links to websites where you can find out more.

I really really love this book. The projects are interesting and varied and the author is clear in her instructions. Some of the projects are a little dumbed down for my tastes but I think that's because I want to make books to be used rather than books to just look pretty on a shelf. It's not for total beginners either as there is very little on materials so I would perhaps partner this with Book Craft by Heather Weston.
