A valuable and unique approach

Poker Plays You Can Use is definitely a book that has helped me improve my game in more ways than one.Although I play online, and the book is about live games, most of the content I have found extremely relevant and helpful.The first part deals with situations that you find in poker hands and goes into the right level of detail as to how to handle them. These situations are very recognisable at online microstakes tables, and the hand examples as well as being a great learning tool are also very useful when reviewing your play afterwards - they provide a basis for comparison and learning through doing.The second part of the book is as far as I know unique. A series of "Missions" - exercises to carry out while you are playing. Each exercise focuses on a particular aspect of your game, and helps you to develop the right behaviours and practice them until they become semi-automatic (in the similar way that learning to drive a car eventually becomes automatic). This is hugely valuable - many other books are packed full of useful information, but don't help you to assimilate it to the extent that you can act quickly when the situation arises. This book provides such a means and the missions help you on the way to achieving that.For online play, much of the difference is in how you make reads on other players, using for example a HUD. However, the ideas in this book are very adaptable to that.I'd recommend to players at the stage of wanting to get beyond the ABC stage to the point where they are responding to all the aspects of the situation in an optimal way. This will help you improve.
